ROSIE’S JOURNEY

It’s him. My disgusting cousin Julio.

I had a feeling it was going to be him. I did my best to bury this memory. I never told anyone but the Cherry Blossom trees and the roses and the herb garden. I don’t want to relive this. Am I going to have to relive this?

Rosie began to sweat. Then she heard a voice. It sounded familiar, but she didn’t recognize it.

“Rosie?”

“Yes? Who’s that?” she answered.

“This is Salvadora.”

Isabel chimed in, “Isabel is here, too!”

“As in the founders of the Order?”

“Si, hija.” It was Isabel speaking, “We just wanted you to know that we’re here with you. We know the women in the room don’t know what happened to you. If you want to you can communicate with us telepathically during your journey. Just like you do with the plants and the trees and the flowers.”

“Oh wow, okay. Thank you,” Rosie replied in a little bit of shock. She knew the older Priestesses communicated with Isabel and Salvadora, but she hadn’t imagined they would be part of her journey.

“Are you ready to see what you need to see?” Salvadora asked.

Rosie hesitated. “If I have to…but wait, I have a question. I can never remember why I was even staying at Tía Alicia’s that weekend.”

“Your parents were out of town, and they didn’t trust your brothers to take care of you. Because of your Tío Rafael’s drinking, they didn’t want you to stay at Sonia’s either, and Elena was out of the country.”

“That’s right. Thank you.”

Isabel and Salvadora faded way for now and Rosie was transported back to the worst day of her life.

Tía Alicia just left to go to the nail salon.

“I’ll be back in two hours,” she said on her way out the door, “behave yourselves.”

Julio is staring at me, licking his lips.

I always hated when he did that. It felt so disgusting my skin would crawl.

“Did you know some women let two men fuck them in both holes—their asshole and their pussy hole at the same time?” he said, “I saw it in a porn.”

Ew. That sounds like it would hurt. He was only telling me this because he didn’t have any friends to talk to. Probably because he smelled and he had acne. I felt so bad for him, but I also wished he would leave me alone more than anything.

I get up and go to Tía Alicia’s room to get my bag.

I had planned to get in the shower after she left so I could hide out in the bathroom for a while. And lock the door. I figured I could get ready slowly. Drying my hair alone could take 45 minutes. Afterward, I was going to watch something on TV that Julio wasn’t interested in so he’d go to his room and play video games or whatever he does in there.

I bring my things into the bathroom, lock the door, and pull out my little portable radio, which is already set to La Mega 97.
